    ..Durham City had the first camera operated traffic light system in Britain and probably the world. It was operated by a policeman from a small control box in the market place. It was manned day and night 360 days a year. My dad would sometimes take me up to it and lift me up to see inside, all the time dodging the traffic to get there. It wouldn’t seem much now but back then it was an amazing thing. It was taken down in the mid 70’s when the traffic lights became independently automated…
