    … Mr C. lived alone in an isolated cottage at the end of Green Lane, up past the railway tunnel. He owned an old horse, which he kept in a small stable next to his home. If there were enough of us and we had money he would saddle up his horse and let us ride it. Thru’pence (1 new pence) to go up and back down the lane and a tanner (2 and a half new pence) for a ride around the field. It helped pay for the feed for his horse. The cottage is still there…
